This black and white husky mix is available at the Georgetown Animal Shelter, in the Austin area. She's not more than 1 1/2 to 2 years old. She's already passed her due date, so it's now on a space available basis.

She is a sweet girl, a kisser and loves to cuddle with humans. A bit hyper but on par with a puppy's energy, always on the move so it was hard to get decent pictures. She's in great health condition, doesn't mind handling her all over, ears, mouth, paws...everywhere. She knows basic commands (when she's calm enough to listen).

She will be a great dog to have if you are looking for a love bug that's dying to please you.

Chow Chow Needs Home Home

Meet Woody. When an Animal Control Officer starting pleading for Woody's life we had to take notice. Then when both the vet and the groomer were complementary of his manner we knew we must have a great Chow.

Now, we have pictures to show the world. Behold this one year old neutered male who gives kisses and rolls over to have his tummy rubbed. He is good with other dogs, and just wants to hang out where it's cool.

We need an immediate foster or an adopter for this guy. Woody has charmed everyone who has met him so far. He is polite, curious, intelligent and sweet. Yep....he really is a Chow Chow! No mix in this guy!

Remember Kodi and Dakota from The Colony Animal Shelter. Metroplex Mutts rushed in with virtually no notice and saved this handsome pair of huskies. We could not be more thrilled to learn that this handsome duo has landed a fabulous new home with a retired military gal. The new human lost her beautiful rottie a few months ago, and went looking for a new dog. Kodi and Dakota's story really touched her, and of course she fell in love with the breed instantly.

Max loves his new home

A few months ago The Brat Pack let us know that they found a cute little boy named Max. Max had a home that didn't understand huskies, and he was traded from person to person. The Brat's friend found Max roaming the streets. Prior owners were contacted, but they had no interest in retrieving this poor fella who now had a hurt front let. Thankfully these kind citizens took pity on Mr. Max and took him to the vet where his leg was tended to and he even got groomed. Well, he was looking mighty handsome. Thankfully Kate and Bob had put in an application with us, but we hadn't found the perfect match yet. So The Brat's friend and Kate and Bob got together....LOVE at first site. Look at Mr. Max now! I'm thinking they look pretty darn happy. And, that leg is healing great because Mr. Max is already running 3 miles a day with his humans.

Thanks to the Brats, their sister and friend and to Kate and Bob for helping Max find his forever home.

Update Godfrey

Remember this cute Wheaten Terrier? Godfrey found his forever home today. After quite a few inquiries, Companion Animal Network matched Mr. Godfrey with a family that already has a female Wheaten. They have a wonderful backyard with a pool, and quite a dog friendly home. Godfrey walked right into their home and made himself comfortable. One parent is a doctor and usually arrives home by 3:00, and another parent has flexible hours as a yoga instructor. Godfrey must have known immediately that this family loves to love, exercise and play with their dogs. As is many times the case, Godfrey, chose his home. We had several wonderful people interested in this fellow.

Thanks for spreading the word. Congratulations, Godfrey!

Pat with Husky Haven has to be the single best Husky rescuer in the South. She takes in so many needy huskies, and makes sure they all find fabulous homes. Pat doesn't cherry pick the huskies, and spends countless hours making sure everyone is completed vetted and prepared for their new home. Pat has been doing this for YEARS. So, naturally, we try to help Husky Haven whenever we can.

Why we love Gayle Justice (UPDATED)

Gayle Justice is a dog trainer in the DFW area. She's been training obedience to agility to mobility service to aggressive dogs for over 25 years. One of her clients called her this morning. A 6 week old pup had been "let" into their yard overnight. When her border collies went out this morning, they found this surprise. Gayle is assisting her clients get this pup into a rescue group. If you know of anyone who may have an interest, let us know.

The story gets better. Gayle and her client are concerned that whoever left the pup in their yard over night may have left others in the neighborhood. So, they are off to look for more pups. In the Texas heat these guys won't last all day without food and water.

Thank you Molly with CCHS for taking this little sweetheart. She is quite the charmer and loves to cuddle. She also thinks the “big dogs” around here are nosy – they have all been checking on her and run to hubby and I if puppy makes a noise. “Quick Mom, she’s yelling!!!!!!!!!!!

Obesity - It's not just for humans anymore

It's next to impossible to watch the news and not see a story about the obesity crisis in the United States. From rising health care costs to shortened life spans, obesity is impacting Americans across the country. What doesn't make the news as much is pet obesity. Just like for humans, being overweight can cause a lot of problems for pets.

One thing that is hard to remember for a pet owner is just how little weight a pet has to gain to cause a serious health risk. While I can gain 10 pounds and probably not cause a serious increase in my health risks, if my pet gains 10 pounds, that is a 20% weight gain, which could cause serious health impacts.

Not only can keeping your pet at it's ideal weight keep your pet healthy, it can save you money too. A few months ago, when my dog was diagnosed with mild hip dysplasia, I was fretting about what medicines he should be on and how much it would cost. The vet told me that the best thing I could do for his long-term joint health was to keep him slim and trim. So essentially, the best treatment option for my dog was FREE!

So you might wonder, how to I keep my pet from gaining weight? As any fan of NBC's The Biggest Loser knows, it all comes down to calories. A new study has been released indicating that just buying your pet a "diet" pet food may not give you the results that you desire. The amount of calories per volume of different brands of food vary by quite a bit. So basically, a cup is not a cup is not a cup! It's important to pay attention to feeding recommendations and measure out your pet's food accordingly.

Don't forget the treats that you give your pet count as calories too! I have been doing a lot of training with one of my dogs, working on her Canine Good Citizen certificate, so I have reduced the amount of food she gets at mealtime to compensate.

Bottom line, if you are concerned that your pet might be overweight, work with your vet to determine your pet's ideal weight and how many calories your pet should consume each day.

UPDATE: THE VETS PLACE HER AT ABOUT 4-5 YRS. OLD

We have officially named her Corazon ("heart" in Spanish) and call her Cora. She was found in a Sonic, going from car to car searching for her family. She would look up at every driver and wag furiously hoping they would open the door. One Good Samaritan did.

She will be fully vetted before adoption. BUT WE NEED A FOSTER HOME ASAP!!! She is currently playing with a Jack Russell (!!) and another dog, so she is just fine with dogs. Older children would probably be fine. We are told that Cora's coat is like silk and she is as sweet as they come.

Here's a bit of interesting reading for you--a detailed report of which local organizations received financial funding from HSUS (Humane Society United States). As a Texan, we received more than sixty percent of the donations at $294,757. I'm not sure why we warranted such a large percentage of the budget, but thank you.

According to Humane Watch (purportedly reporting from HSUS's 990's--we have not done ANY research on this matter), here's how donations to help care/feed animals broke out:

Total Grants to U.S. Pet Shelters: $6,892,295 (out of $277,009,635 in total spending)

2008's grants are considerably less, despite a budget of over $130 million.

Bottom line: If you are donating to help care and feed the countless unwanted animals in your community, spend your money locally. HSUS has many other programs that may be of interest to you. So, check them out. While you are deciding where to spend your money, you should check out the large percentage of HSUS's budget that goes overseas! Their annual report which includes financial data is available on their website.

Blind Cocker Spaniel is Absolutely Amazing

Dogs just never cease to amaze me. Down in St Petersburg Florida, a blind Cocker Spaniel named Stevie just met the Certification Standards for Human Remains Detection.

Owner/Handler, Marina Casanelles says Stevie has been blind from birth. If you are in the Florida area and want an amazing trainer, check her out.

Kishkan, an owner surrender landed in Carrollton jail, and needs by close of business Wednesday. Kishkan is a sweet fellow between 2 and 4 years of age. You can find both on Carrollton's Petfinder site.

The shelter will reopen Tuesday. Next EU is Thursday at the shelter opening. Remember the ACO here, Joe S., does so much to get his animals out alive, but they are a small shelter. We need to find these guys homes immediately. Let everyone know!

German Shepherd: One Saved & Another in Need

Another wonderful GSD from Arlington Animal Services has made his way into a great home. Some of you may remember Barnaby. Sweet guy that Friends of Arlington Animal Services helped get to safety and all the way up to Wisconsin where a kind GSD rescue took him in.

Here's what the rescue organization has to say about Barnaby's new home:

He has a great home with a couple (husband and wife) who are dog trainers....

Barn's family includes a sweet little 4 yr old pitbull mix dog (female) named Cookie - exceptionally well trained and behaved! Barn will have his work cut out for him!

The family also has 2 children - a boy, age 5 and girl, age 3. The parents report that Barn has been very sweet to them (as I would have expected).

The family lives in a lovely home in Williams Bay, WI, which is a serene little lakeside hamlet that has become popular as a resort town with affluent Chicagoans.

The adopters *discovered* Barnaby during a pet expo in which we both had exhibitor booths directly opposite one another. Barnaby was our *meet and greeter* that day, and the adopters were very taken with him and how well he held up to all the public attention.

Meet Allie (black and white) and Lucy (liver and white). Brent and Karmen adopted Allie from Fur the Animals and Lucy from a private rescuer in Oklahoma. Both girls were originally in high kill shelters. They have become one big happy family in North Texas. Recently we received these pics of the gals playing with some friends. Doesn't everyone look like they are having fun?

Thank you Brent and Karmen for providing such a fabulous home for both these Dal gals. We just love these happily ever after pictures.

Garland Enacts Breed Specific Legislation Illegally

It was brought to my attention today that Garland has enacted fencing
requirements specific to owners of "pit bull dogs" and "pit bull
crossbreeds." Without debating whether such a breed exists and how they
might be identified, our state law specifically forbids any law being
enacted by a city or a county that targets one breed or several breeds of
dogs. If Garland wants to have fencing laws, they can, as long as the laws
apply to all breeds of dogs.

Calling the law a "directive" does not exempt Garland from our state law,
Section 822.047 of the Texas Health & Safety Code which prohibits breed
specific legislation of any kind. Our state law provides:

Sec. 822.047. LOCAL REGULATION OF DANGEROUS DOGS. A county or municipality

may place additional requirements or restrictions on dangerous dogs if the
requirements or restrictions:
(1) are not specific to one breed or several breeds of dogs; and
(2) are more stringent than restrictions provided by this subchapter.

As you can see above, our state law clearly says that the city can place
"additional requirements or restrictions" for their dangerous dog laws, as
long as they are tougher than state law (can never be less stringent than
state law) and they are "not specific to one breed or several breeds of
dogs." Fencing requirements for "pit bull dogs" is in violations of our
state law.

You are encouraged to let the Garland Mayor and Council know your thoughts
on their enactment of this breed specific law. If you live in Garland, be
sure to say so! The address, email addresses and phone numbers are below.

News Release sent May 24, 2010
Garland, Texas - May 24, 2010 -- Garland Animal Services is preparing to
enforce new fencing requirements for pit bull dogs or pit bull crossbreeds.
Pit bull dogs or crossbreeds thereof have been responsible for the most dog
bites since statistics have been kept (2004). Additionally, 27% of the dogs

caught while running at large are pit bull dogs. In response to this
growing public safety problem, Garland Animal Services has developed an
ordinance based directive that requires owners of pit bull dogs to maintain
the animals within a six foot fence.

Specifically, the fence must meet the following requirements:

* The fence must be six feet tall, measured from the ground.
* The fence must be constructed of wooden planks at least ½ inch thick
or 11 gage chain link fencing.
* There may be no gaps or openings larger than 2 inches.
* Fencing must be firmly attached to brace posts buried no less than 18
inches deep.
* All gates must have a locking mechanism that keeps the gates securely
closed.

These directive requirements become effective August 1, 2010.

Pit bull dog owners are exempt from the aforementioned requirements if their
dogs are properly registered prior to August 1, 2010 and if they maintain
compliance with all applicable Animal Service Ordinances such as the display

of city tags and not allowing the dogs to run at large. Pit bull dogs not
registered prior to August 1, 2010 must be maintained within an enclosure
that meets these requirements. Owners who obtain pit bull dogs after August

1st must consider the cost of fence construction as a cost of owning a pit
bull dog.

Wheaton Terrier Named Godfrey

Meet Godfrey, a three to four year old Wheaton Terrier in need of a new start. When Godfrey’s dad died a few months ago, a friend from church tried to find him a home with no real luck. Godfrey sat day after day, month after month at his home waiting for his Dad to return. Dad never returned, and there was no one at home to play with. People came and went with water and food, but life just kept getting worse, and Godfrey was getting lonely. Godfrey was used to being alone because his father travelled all the time, but no one had time to take charge of vetting and rehoming. So, in stepped Gail Whelan, with our whole hearted support.

Godfrey is now at doggie boarding, having a blast. Can you imagine? This is like camp to him. He’s really become attached to a small female. They play quite a bit. In boarding he’s already learned sit (stay….well, not yet!).

Since this guy has not had anyone consistently with him, we really need an adopter (or even a foster) to come forth for this guy ASAP.

Godfrey is great with adults (not sure about children or cats). He gives kisses and asks for more love. He is waggy, friendly. He enjoys his new found doggie friends at boarding too. The friends of his father that were feeding him let us know he is house trained (we don’t know personally, however). Car rides are still very new, so we recommend crating (or having a passenger to love on him) until he learns how much fun it is to cruise in a car.

Godfrey was a bit nervous about new things like groomers and vets, but once he knows who’s in charge, he happily succumbs. Of course he might be a tiny bit stubborn like terriers can be, but we’re not even sure about that yet!

Godfrey hasn’t known walks and other normal dog things, but he is anxious to learn how to be a completely spoiled little fella.
He is neutered and vaccinated and heartworm and parasite free. And, has been started on Heartgard. At around 35 pounds, Godfrey is the perfect sized dog to take on long walks and snuggle with while watching tv and reading a book.

He’s just in need of a forever home to spoil him rotten.

When The Colony received a pair of large husky males surrendered by a family going through a divorce, Metroplex Mutts answered the call. Now we have a really sweet and very vocal pair of huskies looking for a forever home. They have begun a new diet and exercise program to get them into shape. Thankfully, as we know, these guys can drop some pounds fast when properly motivated.

Typical of male huskies, they are quite the love bugs! We know how difficult it is to find someone to take a pair of huskies, but these guys need to catch a break. They are house trained and past the destructive years.

He goes way above and beyond to keep his live release rate as high as possible. Wait until you hear this story. It's so amazing. Thanks, Joe for caring enough to save Ms. Candy. AND.... Now for the story from Joe:

This little lady we name Candy came into the shelter last week as a stray. She was a very much on the scared side and a little very nippy and if we approached her, she charged at us. Because of her being nippy, and growly we had decided that she was not a candidate for adoption or rescue. She was slated to be euthanized this morning.

Because of her unadoptable status we removed her from the main kennel area to a more isolated and quiet area. Well over to the last few days her demeanor has completely changed, she is now a much nicer lady and looks forward to her daily walks. She has also began allowing us to pet and love on her as much as we can. Though we still were not sure if she had changed enough for a safe rescue.

So this morning as I was taking her to the euthanasia room she came out of her kennel run excited for her walk (not knowing anything else), after stretching for a second or two, for the first time since being here she rolled over on to her back with her tongue hanging out to have her belly rubbed. I put her back into her kennel run and decided that I had to find her a rescue to go to.

She is a about 3-5 years old and very, very matted to the point she may need to be sedated for grooming but I am sure once she is groomed she will be a beautiful lady. She seems to do ok with other dogs, mainly ignores them. When she arrives at a new location she may be scared at first like she was here but once she adjust her true gentle nature pours out of her.

I can hold her until next week, but I would really like to see her go sooner so she can be groomed and finally be able to move with out all those nasty knots holding her back.

If you can help her please let me know. She can only go to a 501c3 rescue agency.

Product Review: Dog Mat

We're always looking for great looking, durable, easy to wash, comfortable dog beds or mats. Westpaw has a dog mat called ZooRest. It's not cheap, but the dogs love them. They are warm in the winter and cool enough in the summer. The whole pad is washable and dries VERY quickly in the dryer. Washing these blankies every week, we still get one year without fading or getting "smooshed". So if you want dog mats in the middle of your living spaces, check out WestPaw Designs. And they stand up to husky antics. Give us a shout if you have questions, but here are some cuties trying to avoid the camera on their ZooRest dog mats.

Where does your money go?

Wow! Here's an interesting challenge for HSUS by www.humanewatch.org. It's no news to most folks in rescue that HSUS gives virtually no money to all the local rescue groups and humane societies and local shelters. Humane Watch has been letting the public know this past year with full page ads in major newspapers. Humane Watch claims that since HSUS uses the sad shelter dog/cat pics to solicit funds from John Q public, they are basically committing fraud to get folks to give them money. Humane Watch's message is basically: Please give money to your local rescues, shelters and humane societies where your money goes to saving an animal's life. Today, the press release says Humane Watch will take down their website if HSUS gives 50% of their donations to the care of animals.

Makes for interesting reading. How cool would it be if HSUS used even 25 percent of their more than $130 million/year budget for the care and feeding of companion animals. More low cost spay/neuter and education programs would really continue to improve the unwanted pet population. Education programs that included the need to train companion animals, and what it takes financially and time wise to have a pet would also be a great place to spend some of that money!

Finally, in case you don't know... your local Humane Society is not a division of HSUS. If you want your money to go to the care and feeding of animals, give to local rescues, shelters, and humane societies. However, HSUS has many other programs. In fact a substantial amount of the HSUS budget goes to the international humane society efforts. So, just a word to educate yourself to make sure your donations are supporting what interests you!

Shila Searching and Others in Need

Shila is a little over a year old and weighs about 40 pounds. She is playful but not hyper and is vocal, but sings very quietly! I believe Shila would do well as a companion dog as long as the other dog was fairly easy going. Probably best for children over 10 just because of her energy level. Shila will need to go to training classes to reach her full potential.

We have had an extraordinary amount of medical bills the past month and we really need financial assistance, as well as foster homes.

TAO - is a pure bred male Shar Pei, 3 years old. He came to us in very bad condition and heavy heartworm infestation. For his safety, we are giving him three immiticide injections and he seems to be doing fairly well. His skin is starting to heal nicely, too. Tao MAY be going to Shar Pei rescue in Virginia. If not, he will need a foster home asap!

MILO - is a Cocker Poodle male - 6 months of age. His owner surrendered him to us because Milo had Parvo (he was never vaccinated). He was in the hospital for a while on IVs and antibiotics and that bill was substantial. MILO NEEDS A FOSTER HOME DESPERATELY. HE IS STILL AT THE VET'S OFFICE.

ROMEO -- Romeo is one of the dogs a co-worker surrendered. He is a 6 yr. old Schnauzer. Romeo was blessed to have a wonderful woman apply to adopt him. He went to her home on Monday night. Tuesday morning she took him to her vet for a complete senior wellness checkup. (We had already had him vaccinated and heartworm tested.) Romeo has a severe urinary tract infection and also has kidney stones. He will need surgery and the estimate is $1000 for this surgery. After being given away by his owner, he now has this obstacle to overcome. PLEASE - any amount is appreciated. We need to reach this goal to schedule his kidney surgery.

UMA - Uma is a little female Chihuahua. She was found on a country road with open wounds. The vet believes she was attacked by another animal. Her injuries are serious, but he does believe she will survive. Many wounds cannot be sutured, so she has drains for now. She will be at the hospital at least another week.

I know first hand the difficulty of moving with pets. Two years ago, we had to relocate for work and lived in temporary rental housing for six months. With two Siberian Huskies and a cat, I can't tell you how many times we were turned down. Too bad I didn't have a site like this back then!

Dogs in the City tracks apartments that rent to pet owners. Right now they are focused on the San Francisco Bay area, so pass this along to anyone you know who lives there. If it becomes more popular, hopefully it will spread nationwide!

Koda, Happiness Abounds

Do y'all remember the very handsome Koda? Here's an update from his forever family.

Koda is doing so well. He is a happy and secure boy. We broke down and bought a KING SIZE bed. He sleeps in between us on the lower half lol. He no longer is crated at all when I am gone. He is fine in the back room during the day loose with Lexi if I am gone, but does NOT want to be in there if anyone is home. He is affectionate and a great dog. We take a daily nice long walk. He still jumps up on people and gets wired when they first come in to visit, but is settling down a lot.

He does the cutest things that are such puppy behavior, like barking at a small piece of food and tossing it around, and systematically moving the wood pile across the yard one log at a time!

We just love him to pieces.

Ruger Happily Ever After

Two Boys. One Fabulous Opportunity.

For 1.5 years we have spoiled and TRAINED Jefferson Pagoda and Maxwell Smart. Why so long? Well we will NOT separate them!

"The boys", as they are affectionately named, are house trained and obedience trained, and incredibly sweet!

Maxwell and Jefferson need to find a forever home where they can continue to love their humans and be loved.

They are used to having a stay at home parent, and do enjoy chicken, shrimp and buttermilk pancakes.

At 2 to 3 years of age, they are past the wicked stage, and now are the best huskies you could hope to have.

Jefferson would be a tremendous agility dog. Mostly Maxwell is content to lounge around. And, if you love to hear the huskies talk, they will deliver.

Meet Ruger

Hello everyone.

Check out Ruger. He came out of the Arlington Shelter. One front leg was in such horrible condition, it was removed. But nothing will stop this young fella.

He is waggy, friendly, fun loving and a doll. EVERYONE who has met him has commented on what a great temperament he has.
He likes other dogs, and people of course.
He takes treats ever so gently.

Ruger could benefit from a bit of obedience training, but he's a smart boy and will master commands immediately with a respectful, consistent, loving leader. He already knows sit, and actually has fabulous manners considering he's been locked up for months now.

A lot of people have their hands in his rescue. Arlington's shelter vet, Friends of Arlington Animal Shelter and a GSD trainer have all been helping him. I actually just met him to take some photos so we can spread the word. Of course, you know I am a sucker for a large, friendly male GSD or husky!

Ruger is still underweight. With exercise he will get the muscle tone he needs. He's no small GSD, but that just adds to the charm. He is incredibly affectionate and just needs a chance!

Please spread the word in case someone would like to foster or adopt. Ruger is ready to have a loving family to stroll him and play with toys.

The Euless shelter has a young (maybe two years?) male husky. We really would like to move him out of the shelter as they are getting dangerously full. His name is “Oscar”, we know this because he was surrendered by his owner. Apparently he was taking the dog to work every day for the last year and is not able to do that anymore. Oscar is very friendly with people and gets along well with the other dogs. He is house broken and current on all his shots, but not neutered. Zara is ready for her new home. Several months ago Adopt a Husky rescued Zara from a local shelter. She had a horrible bronchial infection, and a minor case of heartworms. Now she’s cured and ready for action. At two to three years of age, Zara can run like the wind with her husky pals, but will calm down enough to be gentle with the kiddos.

Zara is practically perfect in every way. From the moment you meet her, Zara will shower you with love and attention. Of course each of our huskies has just one little quirk to their personalities! Zara….well she’s a runner. Keeping her from leaving the yard is a challenge. But for the diligent husky parent, Zara is well worth the effort.

This gal has been waiting for a home for over 6 months. Roxette is staying at Hillside Veterinary Clinic. From the DFW Spay Day Committee:

We're offering 300 exams, spay or neuter plus rabies and distemper vaccinations for $45 per pet. MAC is partnering with KCAAP (Kaufman County Animal Awareness Project) and TCAP (Texas Coalition for Animal Protection) plus the SPCA along with many local veterinarians, vet techs and volunteers to provide these services.

We have plenty of appointment slots left. KCAAP and TCAP will be providing surgeries from Monday, February 22 through Friday, February 26 and the week will culminate on Sunday, February 28 at the SPCA's Martin Spay Neuter Clinic with additional surgeries.

Volunteers are still needed at all locations. The wonderful folks who volunteered last year had a great day! So let us know if you'd like to help.

We're still in search of a foster or forever home for Ms. Sky.

Sky was at the shelter in a closet with a heater on after having escaped a yard tied to a tree with no food.

She was only 23 pounds, but has now topped the scales over 30. She is still a very picky eater, but otherwise is acting like a typical husky.

She's very friendly, and loves other dogs.

She's just around 2 years old, and needs a loving home to shower her with attention, food and exercise.

Pumpkin needs a new home

Pumpkin needs a FANTASTIC forever home. She is sitting in adoptions at Arlington Animal Services. What unusual, and beautiful markings Ms. Pumpkin has! She was found by a citizen that kept her a week until they left for Christmas vacation. They said she was tremendous. But they had to turn her into the shelter when they left town. Pumpkin was adopted the same day she got to the shelter, but when she tested positive for heartworms, her adopter backed out.
However, Pumpkin made it out of the shelter one more time.

One week later, she was dumped because she had an aversion to the crate. She did NOT tear up anything in the house, but they didn’t want to deal with a dog that didn’t like the crate. The thought that she might tear something up was too much for the adopter.

Debra has graciously placed Pumpkin back into adoptions. Everyone who has handled her has raved that she is just the biggest snuggle bunny. And, while she is quite clever, that just makes her more fun to hang with.

So, can you please help us find a person with a little tolerance looking for a snuggly companion who is ever so smart and happy. And, if her forever home had another young, playful dog, that would even be better.

Pumpkin is spayed, has her vaccinations and is ready to walk out the door.

At three years old, Tango is active, but past the wild child years. He loves other dogs, and enjoys spending time with his human on the sofa. Car rides and walks are of course some of his favorite activities.
Now, Tango is not much for a crate, but he's not destructive either.
Like most huskies, Tango can get bored. So, only humans who want a dog in their everyday lives will work for this fella.
Tango would be best in a home with another dog, but if you're retired (or work from home) he may be the perfect companion.

For a change of pace, we are posting about a cat! August Dog Rescue has Mr. Tinker available.

Mr. Tinker found the right tree to get stuck in one month ago, as it was in the front yard of one of our most fabulous fosters! Tinker was rescued and taken inside. He quickly acclimated to indoor life (as evident by the attached pictures), and has his foster mom laughing at every move he makes!
 Tinker is a Ragdoll mix, 6 months old, fully vaccinated, neutered, great with other cats, dogs, and kids.   Tinker has become part of his foster family and loves to play with his 4 month old chihuahua sister! He has decided the master bed is his own, and his foster mom says he is a total joy to be around.  Does Tinker sound like the perfect, joyful addition to your family? Another happy tails post! Hurray! We received this note from Koda’s new family.

“I am attaching a few pics of Koda. It's hard to get pics of him because he won't get far enough away from me long enough for me to snap the pic, except when Lexi is present. The red eyes aren't great-- unfortunately I haven't mastered my digital camera yet. We are doing well. I am crating him only when I leave...he is still sleeping with us, going for a daily walk, and seems very happy. I've thrown a ball more in the last 5 days than in several years ha ha.

I do notice he tends to chew (especially harder food like treats) more on the side with both the upper and lower canine present, but I guess that's okay. He compensates well. I will pray nothing ever happens to that lower canine on his left side :)

Hope one of these will work for your blog. You may want to crop it if you don't want Lexi in it. I'm looking into obedience classes. He is a little wild man on the leash sometimes due to his excitement in exploring, and I find myself or one of Lexi's legs all tangled up. It's pretty comical, but he was better yesterday. Practice makes perfect...”

Thankful for Roads of Hope

In time for Thanksgiving, we want to feature a wonderful transport group that really helps save a lot of dogs, Roads of Hope.

Roads of Hope helped back in September to transport several dogs from a puppy mill bust, even all the way to New Mexico and Tennessee. In October, they helped coordinate a transport for two German Shepherd Dogs from Arlington to Wisconsin.

So, here she is in doggie prison again.

Thanks for everyone’s support regarding Skye. Here she is celebrating her arrival in Dallas last night. Sorry for the photography, but I thought y’all would like a quick update.

Skye is a snuggly and happy gal. She was a real trooper both at the vet and in the long car ride.
Welcome Sara to officially fostering. Sara has been sharing foster duty with 3 recent huskies, and now she has her own! What a great dog to start with. We’ll get this gal some obedience and she will fly out of here (literally and figuratively). Did we mention she was heartworm negative!

Over the weekend, the Centex Humane Society's Second Chance shelter had a fire. They lost many animals in the fire and also sustained significant damage. The shelter is closed at the time, all cats and small dogs have been moved to foster care. The shelter needs donations, so if you can help, please go to this link and click the Paypal button. After lots of hard work, I am happy to annouce that August Dog Rescue's new website is up and running!!

Feel free to distract yourself this morning at www.augustdogrescue.org.

We are also working on a special push to increase the number of our monthly partners - we are currently able to rely on just over $300 coming in at the beginning of each month, and we would be overjoyed to increase this number to $1000 at the beginning of each month.

If 70 people signed up to have $10 automatically donated each month, we would reach this goal!

If 28 people signed up to regularly contribute $25, we would be there!

Your help will allow us to continue regularly taking new animals into the program, as adoption donations don't cover nearly all of our vet bills.

Don't forget that we are a 501c3 non-profit organization run solely by volunteers, so your contributions are tax deductible and going straight to helping dogs and cats in need!

Baskin's story, from Pat:

"A couple was suppose to foster the dog for a month while he was recuporation from heartworm treatment. I usually do not use fosters so far away but because of my surgery and wanting to save him (I got him from the SPCA); I made an exception. After two weeks she emailed me they were being evicted from their house and had to be out by Sat. That was last week and we had three days to make arrangements but none could be made so fast. We called the Henderson Animal Control to see if they could help in any way and they offered to care for him for a week to give us time to make arrangements for him. So she dropped him off there with his paperwork. The HAC were very nice and said they would keep him in a quiet place since he was in heartworm treatment. I would just go up there and get him if I could but I just had back surgery and it is about a 7 hr trip. Too much for me right now. So if anyone knows anyone or has any suggestions please let me know. We will pay for the gas. Baskin is a Red and White Siberian Husky and weighs about 55 lbs. He should have a 500 crate with him. I will give more information to anyone that is willing to help.Thanks and you can crosspost to other rescues in Texas in case someone is making the trip this way."

Sitting at Arlington Animal Shelter with the clock ticking in just a few days are a beautiful young female Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (my neighbor adopted a male that must have been at the same location as he was sunburned too) and a very happy white male husky with brown eyes.

If you aren't familiar with the retriever, she's quite a bit smaller than a golden or lab, but just as friendly and smart. The Husky/GSD is always smiling. He's definitely got some clown in him.

We need some adopters for this guy and gal. Give me a shout if you'd like more information, or contact Arlington Animals Services directly.

Meet Festus (aka Scott) from Denton

Festus, aka Scott, landed in the Denton shelter at the spry age of somewhere around 10. The shelter volunteer, Amy, and a sponsor took pity on him and took him to a vet for a full blood panel and check up. The vet said he had the worst ear infection he'd seen in a long time, and his ears are a work in progress right now. He is very hard of hearing probably. Festus has been started on thyroid medication., but otherwise his blood panel was normal. Amy is not at all set up for keeping another dog long term, and someone must step up for Festus ASAP before Amy is forced to return him to the shelter. After all, Festus is only out on loan. The sponsor really wants this dog saved, and is working diligently to find a forever home for this senior designer dog.

Amy reports Festus has really taken to a life indoors with treats, toys and love. He follows her around everywhere. Festus is a great candidate for a senior for seniors program, as he is pretty laid back. Can someone find a friend or neighbor for this fellow?

Amy and the sponsor do so much for rescue. Let's help them get the right result immediately.

Huskies in Need

Hello everyone. I hope your week is filled with plenty of tail wags and play bows.

In the last two weeks Adopt a Husky has pulled a couple of dogs in need of medical attention. In particular, I'd like to introduce you to Stella, a husky/mal mix about 3 years old. Stella was wooing her heart out to be rescued from the Arlington Animal Shelter. Despite a limp she was quite willing to jump up and say hello to any passer by. Adopt a Husky of Dallas knew she would require significant medical attention, but just couldn't leave her behind. Stella will undergo ACL surgery this week at the Mustang Surgery Center. Now we are happy to report that they were rescue friendly in charging only $1,800 for a surgery that they normally charge $3,500. However, that is a bit more than the Husky Bank is able to pay on its own. Of course, Ms. Stella also has heartworms.

I am also attaching a picture of Zara who was rescued out of Irving. Zara went to the vet this weekend and was diagnosed with pneumonia. This poor little gal who is less than 2 for sure also has heartworms.

To all my friends who receive our email blasts and who visit the Fur the Animals blog, you know we don't generally ask for money for our pack since we are such a small private rescue. However, today the wonderful pack at Adopt a Husky of Dallas (a 501c3) needs a donation infusion.

Many people think that $10 and $20 donations don't make a difference. While we encourage you to give whatever you can, please know that $10/person can end up covering her medical bill.

Please take a moment to send whatever you can to Adopt a Husky for these wonderful gals. At a time when the shelters are flooded with animals, we are doing all we can to find fosters and adopters. Please forward to your friends.
